no roofOn the morning of Sunday January 11 a fire of unknown origin has destroyed part of the most ancient hotel in Ethiopia – the Itegue Taitu Hotel – making away with Jazzamba, the historic ethio-jazz club. Among the landmarks in Addis Ababa’s architectural and cultural heritage, these places are especially dear to me because here started my discovery of Ethiopia. It is in an infinitely sad state of mind that I am writing following note, in the auspice that these places will soon be back to their original splendour. Continue reading »

Mahmoud Ahmed performing at Selam music festival

Canta, danza, recita e gioca col pubblico. Senza concedersi tregua. I musicisti che lo accompagnano sono stremati, lui è fresco come una rosa. Mahmoud Ahmed ha 71 anni, ma da come sta in scena sembra ancora il ragazzino che una notte del 1962 salì sul palco dell’Arizona club di Addis Ababa per sostituire il cantante della Imperial Body Guard Band di Haile Selassie, il Re dei Re. Da lì a poco si sarebbe trasformato nella voce guida del movimento musicale noto come “Ethio Jazz”. Continue reading »
